    Museum Item of the Week

    Uncategorizedon August 7th, 2014Comments Off

IMG_2006 IMG_2004This week, it can also be a Throwback Thursday item.  This week, we are featuring a pair of BMW Team Polo shirt and jacket.  Both have the Roundel and Motorsport stripes on the front with “BMW Team” embroidered on the back.

We assume these are from the 80s.  Unfortunately, both pieces have yellowed with time.  Oh well, they are still neat pieces to have in our collection. These are just a small portion of the racing memorabilia we have in our collection.

IMG_1939This item just arrived a few days ago as part of a collection donated by a long time BMW collector and enthusiast.  This is a beautiful painting of his BMW M1 with a reflection in a pond.  It measures 38″ x 28″. We are very happy to add this to our collection.  It will have a good home.

There were only 453 BMW M1s built. This started as a collaboration with Lamborghini. However, after Lamborghini had some financial problems, BMW took over and finished the project. Today, it is one of the rarest of BMWs.  It is one of the favorites with us here at the Foundation.

    M Technic Steering Wheel Box

    M Technic Steering Wheel Box

IMG_1924BMW M Technic sport steering wheel. Yes, this is an original, uninstalled M Technic steering wheel in the original box. We acquired this from a large collection of memorabilia in 2012. This item is just too cool …and we had to keep it in the collection. This goes to the E28 M5. The box is showing it’s age, but you don’t see M Technic stuff much anymore. Sorry, it isn’t for sale or trade, don’t even ask. It is staying in the collection.

2014.7.1“M Flight” The artist of this piece has always been a BMW Motorsport racing fan, so this is where he drew his inspiration for this project. New Year’s Day is a very important holiday in the Japanese culture, and it’s customary to wish your friends and family heartfelt good wishes for a positive and prosperous new year. As an artist of Japanese descent, he is holding onto this tradition by creating this hand-crafted, floating sculpture as a fun BMW memento to celebrate BMW’s rich Motorsport history and to wish all his passionate BMW-enthusiast friends, a happy and prosperous new year.

The three flying origami cranes represent BMW’s early involvement in aviation, and the three colors reflect the original BMW Motorsport racing colors of the 70s, which eventually became the recognizable Tri-color M logo on all of BMW’s modern high-performance vehicles of today. To complete the sculpture, the artist incorporated the iconic Motorsport roundel logo that BMW race teams wore proudly during competition in the 1970s, as a tribute to the glory days when the mighty 3.5 CSL dominated all the racing circuits in Germany and Europe.

Prepping for an Open House tomorrow

    Uncategorizedon May 1st, 2014Comments Off

IMG_4474_1000x666 IMG_4476_1000x666 IMG_4479_1000x666 IMG_4482No museum item of the week today because we have been busy getting the warehouse organized for two open house events tomorrow.  We will have visitors from Sharkfest (E24 6 Series) and Schuh Syndikat (E36/8 Z3 M Coupes) stopping by throughout the day to tour the Foundation Library, Archives, and Museum.

Thank you to three Sandlapper BMW Chapter members for loaning their cars to display in our museum.  Brett Baker’s 1999 Z3 M Coupe, Marcus Schall’s 1988 M6, and Michael Mitchell’s 1989 325is.  We have one more special car arriving later today and possibly two more tomorrow to add to the displays.

Thank you to Ian Branston and Larry Hall for helping get the warehouse organized.  We appreciate you volunteering here.

We are looking forward to the open house events tomorrow.  The cars have been cleaned up (lots of pollen in this area). Look for pictures of the open house tomorrow.

IMG_1577IMG_1580Just donated to the Foundation – This 1:18 scale model of the BMW F10 M5 model.  It is a very limited edition customized model showing the Longest Vehicle Drift car.  In 2013, Johan Schwartz drifted a M5 for 51.278 miles at the BMW Performance Center.  Also included in the donation is this signature card created after the record was broken. It is autographed by Johan.

IMG_1512Baby Bimmer Brew 20W/50 Pale Ale.  This beer was created for the 1999 BMW CCA Oktoberfest by the Hoosier Chapter.  We have acquired an unopened bottle of the brew for our collection. It is unusual to find anyone collecting unopened bottles of beer for years, but this one survived.

IMG_1473Item of the Week: This coming weekend is the Tudor United Sports Car Championship race at Long Beach.  To wish our BMW friends good luck, here is a print by Roger Warrick showing the one-two finish of the BMW RLL Z4 GTE from 2013.  This print is signed by Dirk Muller, Maxime Martin, and Bill Auberlen.
