    Museum Item of the Week

Our friends at the BMW PerforIMG_1082_982x749mance Center recently remodeled their facility. When we heard they were removing a lot of the pictures and murals hanging on the walls, we jumped at the opportunity to rescue them for the Archives. This was perfect timing because we were in the process of painting and fixing up our new building before we moved in. Since we are now next door to the PC, it was easy for us to pick up all the cool stuff.

This is showing of the BMW F800GS motorcycle. Yes, if you didn’t know it, the PC does also offer motorcycle training classes besides their driving school classes and new car deliveries.

We would like to thank our friends at the PC for allowing us to collect all the cool pictures and murals you had. We will proudly display this in our new building.

    Foundation Board and Staff

The BMW CCA Foundation is pleased to announce that it raised $1,060,000 in the first year of the $7,000,000 Capital Campaign. Through the generosity of our chapters and their members, $246,000 was raised via the Challenge Grant. With the matching funds, the Challenge Grant contributed more than $492,000 to the Capital Campaign.

Exceeding the $1,000,000 goal is a tremendous achievement by the BMW CCA and the Foundation. The strength of the first year will allow the Foundation to fund an aggressive goal to grow the Street Survival program in 2014. Also, with the new facility next to the BMW Performance Center, the Foundation looks forward to becoming an enjoyable destination for BMW CCA members and BMW enthusiasts visiting South Carolina.

The Foundation Board and the BMW CCA Board would like to thank all of those who contributed their time, money, and support to the Capital Campaign in 2013. Working together, we look forward to a successful 2014!

It has been one month since the Foundation moved into our new 15,000 square foot building next door to the BMW Performance Center.  We are excited to be here.  Many people volunteered to help us move and get set up.  Many more have stopped by to visit our new home.

We are located at 190 Manatee Court, Greer, South Carolina 29651.  We are just off I-85 and Highway 101 across from the BMW Manufacturing and next door to the BMW Performance Center.  If you are traveling through this area, please be sure to stop by for a visit.  It is well worth your time.

BMW CCA Foundation Wins Club Of The Year Award

Members of the BMW CCA Foundation Board attending the inaugural meeting at the Foundation’s new building received an unexpected surprise. Bruce Hazard, president of the BMW CCA, announced that the BMW Clubs International Council has chosen the Foundation as the winner of the 2013 Club of the Year Award at its recent meeting in Slovenia.

Ian Branston, who recently stepped down as chairman of the International Council after ten years in that office, was on hand to make the presentation to the BMW CCA Foundation Board president, Leo Newland. In congratulating the Board, Branston—now a resident of Greenville, South Carolina noted that while other International Council awards recognize the efforts of individuals or couples, the Club of the Year Award—now in its second year—recognizes the collective efforts of many people.

In this case, the BMW CCA Foundation has been recognized for its program of preserving and archiving the history of BMW and in particular the exceptional efforts in delivering the Tire Rack Street Survival training to teenagers across the country.

    Museum Item of the Week

    Uncategorizedon August 14th, 2013Comments Off

Item of the Week: Last week, we brought you the first “super car” from BMW.  This week, we have the ultimate BMW powered car, the McLaren F1 brochure.  We recently acquired this for our collection.  Only 106 cars were built between 1992 and 1998. It is powered by a BMW V12 6.1 Liter engine.  The F1 was the first production car to use a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. In 1998, the F1 became the fastest production car built running at 240 mph. In 1995, the F1 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright – with three more F1s following in the top five spots.

A rare car and a rare brochure.  This is a nice addition to our collection.  This brochure shows the development of the car.  Apparently it was given out to special guests who saw the unveiling of the F1 in Monaco.

    Museum Item of the Week

Item of the Week: Recently donated to the Foundation is this rare spiral bound brochure for the BMW M1 in English.  The M1 was built from 1979 – 1981.  This mid-engine car was built to be a race car.  BMW had to fulfill a sufficient number …for homologation. Only 456 M1s have been built. In the US, David Cowart and Kenper Miller won the IMSA GTO championship in 1981 in the Red Lobster M1.
Tune in next week when we will feature another rare supercar brochure that we just got.

    Museum Item of the Week

    Uncategorizedon July 31st, 2013Comments Off

Item of the week: Since 1983, Car And Driver Magazine has put out a “10 Best” list.  It started out as just the 10 best cars for the year, but grew into all sorts of 10 best (or worst) categories.

The BMW 3 Series first appeared on this …list in 1992 with the E36 body style.  Since then, the E36, E46, E90, and now F30 3 Series has appeared on the list for 22 years consecutively!    Congratulations BMW!  Only one other car model has been on the list more than the BMW 3 Series – that would be the Honda Accord for 27 years.  However, Honda can’t say it appeared for 27 years consecutively.  There were two gaps with a two year absence each time.
In our collection is the crystal trophy from 1993 for the BMW 325i.  It stands about 11 inches tall.
